Applications by Industry
Inks
Copper phthalocyanine pigments form the foundation of blue and green colour space across the entire printing ink industry, from conventional offset and flexographic processes to modern digital and UV-curable systems. Their outstanding tinctorial strength, transparency, and compatibility with virtually all ink vehicle chemistries — including mineral-oil, vegetable-oil, water-based, solvent-based, and radiation-curable binders — make them the default choice for process cyan and a wide range of spot colours. CPC blues deliver the clean, bright masstone and excellent rheological behaviour that pressrooms demand at commercial print speeds, while PG 7 provides the only single-pigment green that combines full gamut saturation with the heat and solvent resistance needed for laminated packaging. Formulators can fine-tune shade, flocculation resistance, and flow properties by selecting the appropriate crystal modification and surface treatment for each ink platform.
Coatings & Paints
Copper phthalocyanine pigments serve the full spectrum of coatings applications, from cost-sensitive architectural emulsion paints to the most demanding automotive OEM and aerospace finishes. Their combination of exceptional weatherfastness, chemical inertness, and high chroma makes them indispensable wherever durable blue or green colour is required. Non-flocculating grades are essential in metallic and pearlescent basecoats where any pigment agglomeration would disrupt aluminium flake orientation and destroy the flop effect. In powder coatings and coil coatings, heat stability up to 200 °C and compatibility with TGIC, HAA, and polyester–epoxy hybrid binders are baseline requirements. Formulators select among alpha and beta crystal forms, untreated and surface-stabilised variants, to optimise the balance of shade, dispersibility, flocculation resistance, and cost for each coating technology.
Plastics
Copper phthalocyanine blues and greens are the workhorses for blue and green coloration across the entire plastics industry, valued for their exceptional heat stability, chemical inertness, and total resistance to migration. Unlike many organic pigments that sublime or bleed at polymer processing temperatures, CPC pigments remain locked in the polymer matrix from extrusion through end-use, satisfying the strict migration and extraction limits of food-contact, toy safety, and medical-device regulations. PB 15:3 handles the vast majority of commodity-resin applications — PVC, polyolefins, and polystyrene — while PB 15:4 is the grade of choice for engineering resins such as PA, PC, and PBT that require processing above 280 °C. PG 7, with its fully chlorinated ring, routinely withstands 300 °C and above, making it the only viable single-pigment green for polycarbonate and high-temperature nylon compounds.
Textile Printing
In textile pigment printing, the colourant is bound to the fabric surface by a polymeric binder resin rather than being fixed into the fibre structure as with reactive or vat dyes. This makes pigment printing substrate-independent — the same formulation works on cotton, polyester, nylon, and blends without requiring different application chemistry for each fibre type. Copper phthalocyanine blues and greens are the dominant pigments for blue and green shades in this segment because of their high tinctorial strength, excellent wash and light fastness, and compatibility with both aqueous binder emulsions and digital inkjet ink systems. As the industry moves rapidly toward digital pigment printing, the demand for ultra-fine, narrowly distributed CPC dispersions with particle sizes below 1 µm continues to grow, placing new demands on pigment finishing and surface treatment.
